Bicycle Safety

Published by blognuts under News, Tips Edit This

I was pulling out of a parking lot yesterday and there was a guy on a bicycle, zooming past the drive way on the wrong side of the street. I slammed on my breaks, a little bit shaken and followed the guy with my stare. He did not look back. He was totally oblivious. Thank God I didn’t hit him.  I was so scared for him. Its like he didn’t mind what could have happened to him and he wasn’t even wearing a helmet!

I realized there are a lot of bikers/ cyclist who simply do not know road rules. Here are some bicycle tips that i can think of as someone who has friends who often bikes to commute … and occasionally bikes myself.

1. Keep your bike in good condition. Check your tires and breaks regularly.

2. Wear proper bicycle helmets. And use them! I saw some people holding their helmets while they bike or dangling from their necks. Jeez!

3. Obey traffic signals and traffic lights.

4. Do NOT ride against traffic.

5. Make eye contact with drivers.  Do not assume the driver sees you.

6. Use hand signals. Seriously.

7. Do not use headphones or earphones while biking. This goes to a friend of mine too who listens to her IPOD while biking. PLS PLS PLS DO NOT USE THAT WHILE BIKING.

8. Be prepared to use your breaks!

9. Do not pass on the right.

10.Do not remove your reflectors. There’s a reason why its there. Its not just for design. And i know people who take those out, so pls DONT.

11. Use lights at night. Yes, that is the law!

I also found this online - How To NOT Get Hit By Cars - Important Lessons on Bicycle Safety.

Its short but a good read.. Its not just about bicycle safety. Its how to avoid getting hit by a car while you’re biking on the road. Very helpful information :)
